Why an Embassy?

Timor-Leste is not only the world’s newest nation, but it is also the poorest in our region. Australia has a long and sometimes mixed history of involvement with Timor-Leste, and most recently has used its leadership role in the region to help bring democracy and independence to the Timor-Leste people, allowing them to commence the arduous journey to long term sustainability. At present only an interim Embassy facility exists. [See media release here.]
